Physical Therapy and Home Care near Tucson, AZ

Physical Therapy uses a variety of treatment techniques to increase a patient’s physical abilities, reduce pain, and restore function. By strengthening flexibility, balance, and coordination, many elderly patients find that physical therapy not only helps to heal from an ailment but also increases their strength and well being overall. It can also be extremely helpful in order to avoid future decline in health.

Therapy can be prescribed for many reasons. Below are a few of the most common.

  • Diabetes
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Stroke
  • Vertigo
  • Recovery from a fall or injury
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Ailments in all parts of the body such as knee, back, shoulder, etc.

Maintaining a life of independence can be maintained through therapy and will aid in increasing a productive lifestyle. Talk to a doctor about what exercises you or your loved one can do at home in order to improve strength and limit risk of falling.

Below are two example exercises that can be done at home to enhance coordination. Please note; seniors should complete all exercises next to a chair, railing, or person to help in the event that you or your loved one becomes unsteady. A senior should not engage in overly challenging treatments unless prescribed by a doctor.

  1. The Flamingo Stand – While holding onto the back of a chair, stand on one leg for 10 seconds. Rotate between legs and continue for 8-10 sets. Once this is easily accomplished, stretch the leg that is off the ground as far out as possible while still holding great posture.
  2. Toe the Line – Walk approximately 15-20 steps in a straight line by placing one foot in front of the other. Each step, the toe of one foot should be touching the toe of the other foot. Keeping a focal point in front of you can help to remain stable.

Physical Therapy is just one example of assistance that can help seniors to feel more independent and encourage a healthy lifestyle while living in their own home.
